Earlier this summer I was investigating the economics of transferring
animations from disk to tape in the Charlotte, NC area. I called
about fifteen video post/productioni houses, and of the original
fifteen, it seems like maybe five or six offered disk-to-tape
services. All but one were based on single-frame controllable VTRs,
hooked to IBM PCs. The exception was a company using the MARS card,
which some of you know is an MPEG output card. The woman with whom
I spoke about the MARS card claimed it provided broadcast quality,
which I found hard to believe.
All the businesses I spoke with said they used Colorado Jumbo backup
tape drives as the source digital media. I think one company also
used Syquest 270's.
The real kicker was that these companies were charging anywhere from
$40 per frame to $200 per hour for use of their equipment. So,
Brad, in answer to your original question, if the rates for this kind
of service where you're located are similar to the rates in Charlotte,
I'd say the PAR would be the less-expensive alternative. I can't speak
for the cost of a Betacam SP machine, but you might look into Hi8 or
SVHS as a compromise. Maybe a small-business loan would be in order...
Good luck, and keep us posted on the solutions you come up with.
